Charles Louis

Charles F. Louis joined the University of California Riverside as Vice Chancellor for Research on July 1, 2004. Louis holds the concurrent appointment of Professor of Cell Biology & Neuroscience at the University of California Riverside.

Prior to the University of California Riverside, Louis spent over twenty years at the University of Minnesota where he served in a number of administrative positions that included Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics, as well as Assistant Vice President for Research and Associate Dean of the Graduate School; he has also held academic appointments at Georgia State University, the University of Connecticut Health Center, and Leeds University in England.

Louis has served on numerous federal and private funding agency peer review panels, the Boards of the Minnesota and Georgia biotech trade associations, and was recently elected to the Board of the Council of Research Policy and Graduate Education (CRPGE) of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC).

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Chemistry from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, his D.Phil. in Biochemistry from Oxford University, England, and subsequent post-doctoral training at Stanford University. Louis has 145 peer-reviewed publications since 1970 and 142 meeting abstracts. His research has been funded by NIH for over 25 years; it focuses on the role of calcium in cell signaling and involves several experimental approaches including molecular biology, electrophysiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and biophysics.
